Long before Sri Lanka became recognised the world over for Ceylon Tea, the tiny island nation south of India was one of the world’s most famous producers of coffee. Coffee was introduced as a commercial crop to Sri Lanka by the Dutch and was lovingly nurtured by the British. It is estimated that by 1863, the value of coffee imported into Europe amounted to £270 million, with one third originating from Sri Lanka. All was well, until an epidemic of coffee rust wiped out the crop in Sri Lanka. However, small farmers working with expert botanists have been able to resurrect Sri Lanka’s coffee plantations and production has continued to grow since the ‘90s.

Today, Sri Lanka grows unique varieties of both Arabica and Robusta beans with certain varieties ranked amongst the best in the world. For instance, the Lakparakum variety of Arabica coffee grown in Sri Lanka has received a cupping score of 86 from the Specialty Coffee Association, thus cementing its status as an excellent specialty coffee.
